Caregivers’ Perspectives on Technology Solutions
Using survey data from more than 2,000 unpaid caregivers supporting Medicaid beneficiaries, this study examined perspectives on technology solutions. Results show caregivers perceive technology solutions to improve their tasks and well-being associated with caregiving while also noting challenges associated with these solutions.
Unpaid caregivers play a central role in supporting Medicaid beneficiaries receiving home- and community-based services. Technology solutions include devices and tools designed to support independence, safety, communication, and daily caregiving activities in the home. This study examined caregiver experiences and perspectives with five technology solutions: remote caregiving tools, environmental controls, medication dispensers, wearable technologies, and induction stovetops.
Among caregivers using technology, most reported improvements in well-being, including reduced anxiety and support with medication management. Non-users also expressed strong interest in technology solutions but identified barriers related to safety concerns, cost, and usability. These findings highlight opportunities for Medicaid programs to strengthen caregiver support through technology-enabled tools and strategies.
