Anthem Names Dr. John Whitney as Vice President, Medical and Clinical Pharmacy Policy

INDIANAPOLIS—Aug. 2, 2017—Anthem, Inc. today announced that John Whitney, MD, is now serving as vice president for medical policy and clinical pharmacy policy. In this role, Dr. Whitney leads Anthem in the development and maintenance of its companywide medical policies and clinical utilization management guidelines as well as clinical pharmacy policy which informs the process for formulary tier decisions. The position was vacated by Dr. Alan Rosenberg, who retired in June.

 "Dr. Whitney brings an impressive mix of experience in the domains of organizational leadership, critical evaluation of medical evidence, the broad landscape of healthcare, and the rapidly evolving pipeline of drugs, technologies, and medical devices," said Dr. Stephen Friedhoff, Anthem senior vice president of clinical strategy and programs.  "Dr. Whitney's leadership will be critical to ensuring that Anthem's 40 million members have access to the most current evidence-based care."

Dr. Whitney is responsible for leading clinical and operational teams, taking a lead role advising senior business, clinical and health policy executives,  and representing Anthem with major specialty societies, trade associations, and other organizations related to these as well as other related clinical health policy initiatives.

Dr. Whitney has worked for Anthem in various roles since 2002. He worked as a state medical director, as a managing medical director, chief medical officer of utilization management services, contract medical director for National Government Services and as staff vice president of medical policy formation.

Prior to Anthem, Dr. Whitney was on the faculty at Albany Medical College where he practiced Pulmonary Medicine in addition to his teaching responsibilities. Dr. Whitney earned his medical degree at Albany Medical College and did his internship, residency and fellowship at the University of Vermont, Fletcher-Allen Healthcare.
