From Payer to Partner: How We’re Working to Make Healthcare Better

Elevance Health Impact
March 3, 2026

Key Highlights:

  • Elevance Health is focused on improving how people access and experience healthcare.
  • We use technology, data and quality-driven programs to connect members with the right care at the right time.
  • Our whole-health approach addresses physical, behavioral, and social health so we can be a true health partner for the communities we serve.

You can get your knee replaced, but not at that hospital. You can take this medication to manage your blood pressure, but not the one your neighbor takes. You should see this doctor for your skin condition — period.

Does this sound familiar? We know health insurance can sometimes feel like a roadblock to needed care. We get that many people find their health plan benefits hard to understand. That’s on us to fix — not just by removing unnecessary barriers, but by raising the bar for what people should expect from their health insurance company.

What We Really Do

The truth is, what health insurance companies do is about more than policies and processes. It’s about being an active partner in health with the people and communities we serve. And we agree that we have work to do to improve health insurance and the overall health system.

To deliver on that responsibility, we’re focused on the fundamentals that shape the healthcare experience. That means negotiating for lower costs from hospitals and drug companies, establishing affordable premium rates for people enrolled in our plans, and diligently managing healthcare so dollars go further for employers and families alike.

As a purpose-driven company, though, our goals reach beyond managing costs to making healthcare simpler, more accessible, and more effective. Through advanced technology, predictive data insights, impactful community partnerships, and personalized member experiences, we’re working each day to improve health and healthcare for everyone.

How We Help Make Healthcare Better

We expect care to be both accessible and exceptional, so we build comprehensive care provider networks and create payment models that support the highest-quality care for our members. We design benefits and services that prioritize prevention and allow people to get the right care at the right time in the right setting — because when people stay healthy, everyone wins.

We reward safer care. Through our long-standing Quality-In-Sights: Hospital Incentive Program (Q-HIP), hospitals can earn incentives for lowering surgical infections and meeting other patient safety measures. In 2024, 72% of nearly 750 eligible hospitals participating in the program received financial incentives tied to their metric performance.

We leverage technology to make getting care easier. Our Concierge Care program features an app that connects members who are pregnant and people managing conditions like Crohn’s disease, diabetes, or cancer with nurses 24/7. Its successes include helping to reduce hospital admissions for chemotherapy-related side effects in 2024 by 66%, and helping curb 30-day readmissions by 25% among members recently discharged from the hospital. We also pair insights uncovered with the aid of artificial intelligence with simple digital tools like text messages to help members take healthy actions.

We turn data into timely and effective support. Our three decades of data expertise helps us identify care gaps and guide members to the right next step. That might mean connecting them with a primary care provider or a dialysis clinic, helping them avoid crowded and costly emergency department visits and the surprise bills that can sometimes follow.

Health Beyond the Doctor’s Office

Because most of what shapes health happens outside the doctor’s office, we’re leaning into a whole-health approach. When we consider mental health and the social factors that affect health, such as access to transportation, we can better address members’ physical health needs.

That means using data to deliver customized mental health care, partnering with local organizations to improve access to nutritious food, and helping members find stable housing — so they can focus on their health instead of how they’re going to feed their family or where they’re going to sleep at night.

Our Commitment

These holistic efforts are just a sample, and only the beginning of our commitment to redefine health and reimagine the health system. They reflect our shift from being a payer of claims to being a true partner in health — a goal that transcends financial interests and check-the-box exchanges.

Our industry must help members through the challenges presented by a shifting healthcare landscape. We’re embracing that responsibility with humility and intention, because we know trust is earned, and we believe a better approach to health and healthcare is not only possible — it’s essential.
