Nonprofit Program Supported by Elevance Health Foundation Grant Reduces Preterm Births
A grant from the Elevance Health Foundation helped Creating Healthier Communities (CHC), a nonprofit that works to reduce the high rates of preterm births among Black women, launch the Black Birthing Initiative in Atlanta, Cleveland, and Detroit. In the United States, Black women are more likely to give birth prematurely and 3 - 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women. By partnering with community-based organizations, the Black Birthing Initiative improves access to reproductive health care, addresses social drivers of health, and creates greater health equity.
The Elevance Health Foundation awarded more than $97 million in grants to more than 185 national and local nonprofits in the last three years. The grants are designed to advance health equity in four focus areas: maternal health, food as medicine, substance use disorder treatment, and community resiliency and disaster relief.
