Like many other 2-year-olds, Ryleigh likes to clap and dance. Her medical condition means she relies on a ventilator connected to her windpipe to breathe and needs complex care — a challenge for her mother, Demisha, who manages an overnight job and schoolwork during the day.

With support from Ryleigh’s Wellpoint health plan in Texas, Demisha enrolled Ryleigh at Sunshine Pediatric Day Center — a Prescribed Pediatric Extended Care Center (PPECC) that provides skilled nursing and therapeutic services for children with specialized health conditions.

The care Ryleigh receives at Sunshine has supported her development as well as her mother’s goals and whole health, helping Demisha pursue her education and offering more flexibility with work. It’s an example of how coordination between health plans and care providers can expand access to high-quality care that keeps the focus on people and addressing their unique needs.
