As I reflect on the past year, yet another amid the pandemic, I remain proud of the strength and resiliency of our company, and am deeply grateful to our nearly 100,000 associates, especially our frontline clinicians, who have served our customers, care partners, and communities with unwavering compassion and dedication.

The work we do each day impacts so many people, and the meaningful difference we can make in connecting people to the care, support, and resources they need has never been more important than during these times.

This past year was another strong one for Anthem, as we met our financial commitments and delivered strong growth across our organization. It’s the diversity and strength of our business, built upon the most balanced and resilient health benefits portfolio in the market, that enables us to deliver on our commitments, advance our strategy, and drive growth for our shareholders. Across our organization, we are driving innovation to advance our digital capabilities, data, and resources, simplifying our processes, improving our consumer experience, and delivering products and services to champion a whole health approach and advance health beyond healthcare for consumers at all stages of their lives.

We are a different company than we were ten, five, even three years ago. We have evolved beyond traditional health insurance and healthcare to take a more holistic approach to health – addressing the physical, behavioral, and social drivers that impact health to make whole health a reality. Fueled by a passion for making a positive difference in the world, we are focused on improving health by addressing consumer needs at a personal level, removing barriers to care and health, and creating more meaningful connections across a lifetime of milestones and experiences on the healthcare journey.

Our intent to change our name to Elevance Health marks an important milestone in our journey to become a lifetime, trusted health partner and conveys our evolution and our ambition to work toward a healthcare system that better serves the needs of our consumers, care providers, communities, partners, and associates. Bringing together the ideas of “elevate and advance,” Elevance Health reflects our position as a health leader – committed to elevating the importance of whole health and advancing health beyond healthcare for our consumers, their families, and our communities.

Grounded in our mission and fueled by our bold and ambitious purpose to improve the health of humanity, Elevance Health reflects the company that we are today and will continue to be in the future.

The following pages highlight just a few examples of how we are working, across our organization, to redefine health, reimagine the system, and strengthen communities. You’ll see our purpose and passion shine through the lens of initiatives like our Anthem Housing Flex Fund program, our Changing Pathways program to address opioid disorder treatment, and our efforts to address food insecurity on community college campuses. You’ll see our focus on serving people across their entire care journey, not just a single touchpoint and our commitment to removing barriers to make health more equitable and accessible so everyone can reach their full potential. You’ll see how we are elevating the importance of whole health and advancing health beyond healthcare.

I am proud of all that we are sharing here in our Impact Report and all that we accomplished as a company in 2021 and am excited about the possibilities ahead.
