A Commitment to Climate and Health

Elevance Health recognizes the impact the environment has on critical physical, behavioral, and social drivers of health. We are committed to continually improving the environmental sustainability of our operations and business activities. We work to alleviate the effects of climate change on health as part of our whole-health approach, which encompasses health factors outside of the doctor’s office.

Healthcare is impacted by climate change. It is estimated that the U.S. healthcare industry contributes approximately 8 to 10 percent of greenhouse gas emissions1

We are Powered by Renewable Energy

We met our 2021 RE100 commitment of producing 100% renewable electricity for operations four years ahead of schedule. We are now carbon neutral for all of our operations, meaning we have balanced out our carbon production, but striving for net zero emissions. All the electricity needs of Elevance Health offices, data centers, and clinics are covered by renewable energy.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Climate Pledge

We are proud to be an initial signatory to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Care Sector Pledge, committing us to reducing our operational emissions by 50% by 2030, achieving net zero by 2050, and developing and releasing a climate resilience plan by the end of 2023.

Healthcare Contributes 8.5% of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Line chart showing a steady decline in greenhouse gas emissions between 2013 and 2022. A time line shows that due to an efficient strategy for offices and data centers between 2013 and 2018, and a 100% renewable electricity commitment in 2020, led to Elevance Health becoming the first in the sector to achieve carbon neutral operations by mid 2021

Elevance Health aims to contribute 0% by 2050.

Energy and Climate Performance

Pursue carbon neutral operations for scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions

Renewable Energy

Procure 100% renewable electricity for operations

Supply Chain Sustainability

Engage with strategic suppliers on setting their own scope 1 and 2 science-based GHG emissions reduction targets

Resiliency

Provide enhanced support to the people our companies serve, especially to people experiencing economic insecurity

Community Resilience

While working toward long-term climate goals, Elevance Health and the Elevance Health Foundation are building capacity and the resilience to manage current effects of climate change. We build climate resiliency by preparing for and rapidly responding to immediate needs caused by climate-related disasters like Hurricanes Ian and Fiona, which hit Florida, with on-the-ground support and disaster relief through the Elevance Health Foundation.
